Woman steals Dorothy's ruby slippers from Staten Island hotel

NEW YORK

The Garden Hilton Inn on Staten Island welcomes guests from all over the world. So to make people feel at home the owners put replica ruby slippers on display which were of course made famous in the movie 'The Wizard of Oz'. It's a way of letting guests know that the hotel's staff understands that like Dorothy learned in her journey, "There's no place like home."

"When you come here, we know it's not home so we try to make it as close to home as possible," said Richard Nicotra.

Sadly someone stole the sparkly slippers worth about $2,500 nearly two weeks ago.

Police released surveillance video showing a woman with blonde hair, wearing a gray scarf and light colored jacket walking out of the building with them.

"It's bad enough to be taken but to be wearing them. It's just upsetting," said Nicotra.

The owners of the hotel say two men helped this woman steal the slippers. They know this because the building is covered with 50 cameras because of the more than two million dollars worth of art work on the property.

Hotel guests and restaurant patrons are disgusted and disappointed.

If you recognize the woman on the video, you're asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.
