North Carolina teen faces sexting charges following social media mistake

RALEIGH, NC

The girl allegedly let a 14-year-old female friend and a 17-year-old boy into her North Raleigh home the weekend after Christmas. The boy and the friend had sex and recorded it. An hour later, the girl came out and told her she had sex with the boy.

"She said ((that)), 'I said 'yes' to videotaping it' or something like that. I said, 'Why would you say 'yes'?' She was like, 'I don't know. I trust him, like I think I love him," said the 13 year old.

The girl, who is now in trouble, told ABC11 that the next day another teen sent her the video. That person urged her to post it in order to shame the girl in the video.

"And he was like, 'You should put it on Instagram.' And I was like, 'Oh, really?' And he was like, 'Yeah, expose her' or something like that. I was like, 'Okay.' So I put it on Instagram," she said.

Although the 13 year old admits she put the video on Instagram, she says she did not comprehend the consequences. From there, it apparently launched rapidly into cyberspace.

Two days after the video was posted, police showed up at the girl's North Raleigh home. The girl's mother says they deiced to talk to investigators because police said they might charge the 17-year-old boy with rape. She says she had no idea cooperating would lead to her daughter getting a felony charge.

"They had consensual sex. That's not fair. So that's why I spoke. Now, I didn't know they were going to charge her with a felony," said the mother of the teenager charged, who was at times in tears during the interview.

"I think they are trying to make her an example," she said.

While she thinks the charge against her daughter is ridiculous she wants to warn other parents. She says they should talk to their children and tell them that if someone sends them a sex video or picture they should immediately call the police.

The 17-year-old boy who shot the video is in trouble too. He has been hit with three charges.

It is unclear whether any other teens involved have been charged. The 13-year-old is expected in juvenile court in April.
