Attractive users less likely to get messaged when online dating

The online dating service OkCupid analyzed data from its most attractive female users and how many messages they received from potential matches.

Researchers found that those looking for love online are often intimidated by people who they think are beautiful. Therefore, they are less likely to contact them or will send them a more generic message compared to someone they think is more in their league.

"The less-messaged woman was usually considered consistently attractive, while the more-messaged woman often created variation in male opinion," OkCupid claims in a blog.

The blog also includes charts of 5,000 users and where they rank on a chart using the number of messages received versus the attractiveness of a user. The mathematicians behind OkCupid say they have analyzed the data and came to one major conclusion.

"We now have mathematical evidence that minimizing your 'flaws' is the opposite of what you should do. If you're a little chubby, play it up. If you have a big nose, play it up," the blog said.
