Off-duty officer fatally shoots burglary suspect

HOUSTON

The officer was asleep in his north Harris County townhome when three men broke in. He had been awakened by the sound of breaking glass at his residence in the 500 block of West Road near I-45. He encountered the three burglars and shot at one of them. The officer, who was off-duty, used his service weapon to shoot the armed suspect.

Wearing only his underclothing, the officer chased the suspects outdoors into the townhome complex, where the armed suspect pointed a weapon at the officer. The officer fired more shots, then apprehended that suspect during a physical struggle.

"The suspect who was shot was detained by the HPD officer," said Tom Gilliland with the Harris County Sheriff's Office. "At that point he continued to fight the officer until he was handcuffed with the help of another deputy who had arrived."

Sheriff's deputies arrived and helped the officer handcuff the wounded suspect. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The two other suspects ran away and are at large. There was no description of them available immediately. Anyone with information about the burglars should call 911.

It was unclear how many shots fired by the officer hit the armed suspect or whether the suspect was hit inside or outside the townhome.

One suspect weapon was recovered at the scene. The incident is under investigation by the Harris County Sheriff's Office, HPD and the DA's office.

Aldine ISD put Gray Elementary and Stehlik Intermediate schools on lockdown during the police activity since oth schools are less than a mile from the scene. Those lockdowns were lifted before noon.
