HISD may reconsider proposal to close schools

HOUSTON

The five campuses in the proposal are Jones High School, Fleming Middle School and Dodson, Henderson and Port Houston elementary schools. On Thursday morning, members of the school board worked through a number of scenarios regarding the schools. They range from keeping the schools open, to repurposing some facilities, to closing all five.

The teacher's union and many parents say they're hopeful the board will not vote to close all the schools. But all sides seem to concede that some changes will take place.

HISD school board member Manual Rodriguez said, "Everything's not static. We can't go back and say everything's going to be the same as it was five years ago, and we certainly can't say it's going to be the same as five years from now. But we have to be able to see the changes, understand, and accept the changes."

The board will vote on its final recommendation about the proposed closures at its next meeting in two weeks.
