Mardi Gras celebrations happening in Galveston, Sugar Land today

HOUSTON

From today until Fat Tuesday, the city will be hosting many parades and parties.

The festivities kick off with the Mystic Krewe of Aquarius and Krewe of Gam-Brinus parades on the Seawall.

Dozens of floats and high school bands will participate. The first parade begins at noon and the second at 6pm.

About 300,000 people are expected to pack the island. One of the parades' main attractions is the beads.

"Some people are clever. They have umbrellas or targets for us to shoot at. There's one couple that most years have a hot tub on the seawall and we try to throw our beads in the hot tub," said Mary Kees with Krewe of Aquarius.

If you head out to Mardi Gras, remember you will have to pay to park.

Galveston business owners had asked city officials to waive parking during Mardi Gras but that was turned down by Galveston City Council.

However overnight parking, which is typically prohibited, will be allowed during Mardi Gras.

There is another Mardi Gras celebration going on today. The Whole Foods in Sugar Land is hosting its party for the entire family.

The super store will have plenty of food and music. There will be a king cake sampling, a cart parade and jambalaya cook-off.

The event goes on from noon-4pm at the Whole Foods off the Southwest Freeway and Highway 6.
