Houston's Black Heritage Gallery closing its doors

HOUSTON

The gallery has been in business for 37 years -- 27 of those years at its location on Almeda -- but the owner, Robbie Sutton Lee, says the shopping center has a new owner and she has received a letter telling her she's got to be out by the end of the month.

With no time to find another place, Sutton Lee says she has no choice but to close the gallery.

The community has responded, with leaders and patrons offering new spaces for business, and trying to buy Lee more time in this place.

We spoke with the new owner of the property, who promises he is not tearing down the building, but rather renovating it. He also said he will give the Black Heritage Gallery first right of refusal on moving back in, though the rent will likely be much higher to compensate for the what the owner says are expensive repairs to the old building.
