The Austin City Council early Friday gave initial approval to the updated limits. Under the plan, which faces at least two more votes, homes built in the future would be allowed to house only four unrelated adults, down from the current limit of six.
Existing homes that house up to six unrelated people would be allowed to continue under the proposed measure.
Some residents of neighborhoods near the UT campus have complained about structures being used as dormitory-style homes with an overflow of residents, traffic and trash.
