Christopher Chase was wearing body armor and had a "cop killer" tattoo. He stole a police car and led officers for 16 miles through the streets of southeast Albuquerque, CNN reports.

He reportedly shot at the officers with a semi-automatic weapon, injuring three of them. Police fired back, chasing him into a gas station where the stolen cruiser crashed into a gas pump.

That's when an all-out gun battle began. The suspect was struck eight times and died at the scene.

The injured officers all survived.
