Man killed walking home from grocery store in SW Houston

HOUSTON

Police say the 79-year-old was leaving a grocery store and walking to his home on the other side of Bellaire when he was killed. In fact, police say he was still holding his groceries when he was pronounced dead.

Police confirmed that the driver of a Toyota Camry hit the elderly man. While authorities originally called this a hit and run accident because they thought additional vehicles were involved, they have confirmed that only one vehicle was responsible for the death.

The driver will not be cited because the victim was in the middle of the road, and not on a crosswalk. Still, those who live around the scene say many people walk from the grocery store to the nearby neighborhood every day. Especially with recent construction work, they say it's just not safe.

Witness Glen Taylor said, "It's so bad out here. Last week all of this was a one way. Now it's two way and there's nothing to indicate anything. I've seen wreck after wreck out here."

The victim's identity has not been released, as family members are still being notified about this tragic death.
