Cy-Fair ISD student among world's best chess players

HOUSTON

Maggie Ni, a 3rd grader at Hamilton Elementary School, spent the holidays in the United Arab Emirates competing in the World Junior Chess Championships, where she placed 4th in the under-8 age group.

The tournament is the largest annual junior chess tournament in the world, attracting more than 1,800 players. During the competition, Ni won seven games, lost four and had one draw.

"It was a fun trip for me and my dad," Ni said. "I met a lot of girls from different countries and got some cool gifts."

Ni's been playing chess nearly all her life, and now, has the highest rating in the U.S. for girls 8 and under. She's won four Texas state championships, including her first at the age of 4, one national title, one Junior U.S. Open Championship and the Pan-American gold medal.

At age, 7, Ni is the youngest Woman FIDE Master in the country.
