Parents want justice for son's death, who was fatally shot by an off-duty Navasota officer

HOUSTON

His parents are now expressing their anguish and their fear that Navasota police officer Rey Garza, who was off duty when he claimed he shot their unarmed son in self-defense, will not have to answer for what happened.

Garza is on paid administrative leave. The Harris County Sheriffs Office is investigating the incident. Jonathen and a friend were in a car when the officer, not in uniform, confronted them with a gun. Garza said he was investigating suspicious activity.

The surviving passenger said she and Jonathen thought they were being robbed and were fleeing when Garza fired the weapon.

Garza says he was hit by the car. He didn't have injuries requiring medical attention, and that's troubling to the family of the teen.
