A Houston fire captain who survived the department's darkest day has been given an award for courage.

Capt. Bill Dowling was presented with the Liberty Mutual Firemark Award.

The honor goes to firefighters who represent their communities through courageous and selfless acts.

Dowling lost his legs while fighting a motel fire in May. Four of his fellow firefighters were killed in the blaze.

As a recipient, Dowling is now eligible for a $10,000 donation to his fire station.
