The search is on for a man who police say stole a car with a two-year-old child inside early Sunday. The little boy was later found safe in the wrecked vehicle.

Police were first called to a home on Cortlandt near 38th Street in northwest Houston around 2am. A woman told Houston Police Department investigators she had just stepped out of her 2011 red Toyota Camry when a man jumped into the driver's seat and sped away. Her child was in the back seat.

The suspect lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a ditch shortly after he was spotted by police on Lawn Street near Fortune.

Responding officers found the toddler in his car seat. He was taken to an area hospital as a precaution.

The suspect took off on foot and remains at large.

Police tell us they will fingerprint the car in hopes of identifying the suspect. Anyone with information on this crime can call HPD or Crime Stoppers.
