Dad ready to sue son's youth football league

HOUSTON

Victor Garza has plenty of bragging rights. He's won two Super Bowl championships with the New Territory Knights, an MPV trophy and spot in VYPE Magazine as the 12th ranked player under 12 years old in Texas.

"I like winning, and I'm used to winning," he said.

But his father, also named Victor Garza, claims his son was sidelined because the league believes the young quarterback was practicing with another team.

"I just feel that I let down the team because I'm just on the sideline watching," the 12-year-old said.

Garza said his son was trying out for a another team, since next year he will be too old to play with the New Territory Knights, and did not violate the league's rules.

"It's just unbelievable what several adults will go through to suspend a kid," he said.

Garza has retained an attorney to reverse the Fort Bend Youth Football League's decision to suspend Victor. The attorney sent a letter to the Executive Director Jacqueline Jean-Baptiste. The letter threatens legal action against the league for unfair practices, lack of due process and irreversible harm, among other alleged league violations.

"We hear it's about the kids, it's about the kids. But it seems like in this league, it's about the adults," Garza said.

Garza says among those in the board of directors who voted to have his son suspended are coaches from rival teams.

"How do you explain this to him?" we asked Garza.

"I can't. Every night he asks why, why," he said.

Late Wednesday, Baptiste sent Eyewitness News the following statement:

"After our investigation, we found out that the two players made the roster for the select football league on October 10th. Therefore, there should be no reason why they are currently trying out. The players were warned that they could not participate or practice with that team until the season was over. They violated the rules."

A quick disclosure: Our sports anchor Bob Slovak is the president of one of the teams in the Fort Bend Youth Football League.
