Cold weather sparks string of fires, keeping firefighters busy

HOUSTON

Four people were inside the home on Hoffman and Cavalcade in northeast Houston when the fire started, and they all escaped safely.

When firefighters arrived, fire engulfed the home. High winds made it difficult to put out flames. Firefighters had to pull back when the roof collapsed. The home is a total loss.

A chimney caught fire at a condo on Gessner and Vanderpool in west Houston overnight.

The homeowner told firefighters there had been problems opening the flue. The fire damaged the chimney and roof, but the damage was confined to one condo. The homeowner was not hurt in the fire.
