Dallas-area man gets death for lighting store clerk on fire during robbery

DALLAS, TX

A Dallas County jury on Friday ordered the death penalty for 38-year-old Matthew Johnson of Garland.

Jurors on Wednesday convicted Johnson of capital murder in the death of Nancy Harris. The 76-year-old victim was splashed with a flammable liquid and set ablaze at the Garland store where she worked. Security video captured part of the incident.

Harris, who was able to describe the suspect, died several days after the May 20, 2012, attack.

Johnson was captured during the investigation of reported break-in attempts near the gas station.
