Michigan pair arrested for money laundering during Liberty County traffic stop on Highway 59

CLEVELAND, TX

An out-of-state 2007 Jeep Commander was stopped for a traffic violation on Hwy. 59 and FM 105 just before 8pm Wednesday.

According to officials with the LCSO Narcotics Division, the man and woman in the vehicle consented to a search. That's when deputies found an after-market false compartment beneath the back seat that could only be accessed by a door located under the carpeting. A little more than $9,000 cash was confiscated.

Deputies said the couple was nervous and they had conflicting stories about where they were going and the purpose of the money.

Ramiro Campus Puente, 36, and Yesenia Yepez Flores, 29, of Michigan, were arrested at the scene. They were each charged with money laundering and placed in the Liberty County jail, where they remained Saturday.
