Emancipation Park in Houston breaks ground again for $33 million reconstruction project

HOUSTON

The public was invited to a historic celebration as the Friends of Emancipation Park broke ground for a much-needed $33 million reconstruction project with a community center and monuments to celebrate the park's history and its four founders.

The land that became Emancipation Park was purchased in 1872 as a place to celebrate Juneteenth. The city says the construction will be done in stages so the park can remain open to the public.
