Records: At least 72 incidents of gang-related violence reported at Spring ISD

HOUSTON

There have been at least 72 incidents of gang-related violence involving three or more gang members at campuses in Spring ISD from 2009 through 2012. According to records submitted by the district to the Texas Education Agency, Spring High School, the scene of Wednesday's gang stabbing, had at least three incidents over that time.

The reason we can't give you an exact number is because of federal privacy laws. The law says releasing those exact number of incidents, if it's less than five, could reveal the identify of an individual student.

However, we did get exact numbers for the Spring campus with the most. That's Ricky C. Bailey Middle School with 18 incidents of gang violence. Next are Dekaney and Westfield high schools, each reporting 11 gang incidents over the timeframe.

Overall, 13 out of the 39 campuses in Spring ISD, reported some kind of gang-related violence.

And here's the scariest part: We're told these numbers may be actually be underreported. Why? A TEA official says campus cops will often just list gang violence under other crime categories like aggravated assault instead of gang activity.

Here are all those numbers for all the Spring campuses:

Year ----- Spring ISD Campus ----- Gang Incidents
  • 2011-2012 - Spring HS ----- 1-5?
  • 2011-2012 - Andy Dekaney HS ----- 1-5?
