Houston mayor joins anti-hunger group's challenge

HOUSTON

Mayor Parker will join the Houston Food Bank president in taking the SNAP challenge. The snap challenge is named for the national food stamp program, which asks participants to eat on $28 a week. That's the average allotment for each person on food stamps.

p> So what does the SNAP challenge mean? Starting Sunday, Mayor Parker cannot spend more than $28 on food for a week. That includes any beverages.

She also can only eat food that she purchases for the project. That means no one can buy her food and she cannot eat food already in her refrigerator.

The mayor will have to keep track of all receipts on her food purchases for the week and any notes she has on her experience.

The mayor starts this challenge on Sunday and must continue for an entire week.
