Mayor Parker goes into mock jail at UH to make point about DWI

HOUSTON

The jail cell was at the University of Houston Friday as part of a Texas Department of Transportation campaign to prevent DWI over the Labor Day holiday. Students were invited to put on an orange jumpsuit and step into the cell and drive while wearing goggles that simulate the blurred vision of a drunk driver.

"The first thing you figure out is that you have no idea what's happening between your eyes and what's going on in your head. Everything's in a mixed up type disorientation," student Ali Hosseini said.

TxDOT says alcohol-related fatalities increased during Labor Day last year. There were eight deaths over the weekend in 2011, and 19 last year.
