Firefighters have rescued one person from a burning home in north Houston.

The fire erupted just after 4pm at a home in the 4700 block of Sharman near Cavalcade.

Firefighters arrived on scene and found flames and smoke engulfing the home. Five minutes later, they were forced to go into defensive mode.

Five people were inside the house when the blaze broke out. All made it outside by the time firefighters arrived, but a 74-year-old woman who was trapped on the porch area had to be rescued. She was transproted to Memorial Hermann Hospital for smoke inhalation but she is expected to recover.

An elderly man also treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

It took about 50 minutes and 45 firefighters to finally extinguish the blaze. Its cause has not yet been determined, but we're told the home is heavily damaged.
