HPD: Gunmen open fire at Taco Cabana in southwest Houston

HOUSTON

It happened around 6:30am at the restaurant on Bellaire Boulevard at the Southwest Freeway.

Several armed masked men entered the restaurant and ordered everyone inside to gather. Police say at least two people managed to run out, which is when at least two suspects fired their weapons an unknown number of times.

At least one female employee was shot in the leg and was transported to the hospital.

A witness, who was at the drive-thru at the time of the incident, says he first thought the gunfire was the sound of someone dropping a tray.

"I went to put my money away, waiting on my food," said the witness. "That's when I saw a guy with a black and red bandana on, a black shirt and he had the gun pointed over the counter, shooting."

"Two of the employees came out running and then I called 911 for them. I saw a red car pull out after they ran out. That was it," said another customer. "But I usually go in there every morning. That was crazy."

Police say one suspect took off in a white or red vehicle. The other two apparently fled on foot and then got onto a METRO bus nearby. Police are looking at surveillance video from the restaurant and are looking to see if there is surveillance camera on the METRO bus as well.

Authorities say the suspects did get away with about $300 from two cash registers. Those suspects remain at large.
