HPD: Suspect fatally shot by officer in SW Houston

HOUSTON

Police say they were called to a gas station near Fondren and Harwin because someone was firing shots into the air.

When officers showed up, they found the man in his SUV. They ordered him to get out and when he did, he took off running behind the gas station.

When officers followed him, they say he fired right at them. One of those officers fired back, and the suspect took off again.

A K-9 backup was called and found him in some bushes.

"The suspect turned, looked directly at the officer and again raised his pistol at the k-9 unit as if he was going to fire," said HPD Spokesperson Kese Smith.

Police say Officer E. Newman, a 22-year veteran with the force, fired at the suspect, killing him.

Police say they don't know why the suspect was initially shooting into the air. His name has not been released.
