Baytown SWAT standoff ends with suspect in custody

BAYTOWN, TX

Authorities say it all started around 11:30am at the Love's truck stop along I-10 and Thompson Road when 53-year-old Eric Scheele walked inside and threatened everyone.

"He just came in here screaming, 'If you don't call the cops in five minutes, I'm going to start killing everybody,' and he just left and went outside," witness Merari Gonzalez said.

Baytown police responded, parking a SWAT vehicle behind Scheele's pickup truck, which he was in.

SWAT team members tried to negotiate with Scheele, but they say he wasn't cooperating.

"Anytime the officers spoke to him over the PA system, he'd cuss at them and basically he refused to come out," Baytown Police Department's Edgar Elizondo said.

Scheele finally gave up at around 1:40pm, putting his hands up outside the truck window and then exiting the vehicle. It appeared he was wearing only boxers.

Police say Scheele was not carrying any weapons. He's been taken to the Baytown jail and is expected to undergo a mental assessment.

This isn't the first time Scheele has been arrested. His criminal history includes aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, criminal mischief, DWI, and most recently, a terroristic charge in December.
