The trooper was inside his cruiser at the time of the crash, blocking a lane on Highway 288 near FM 523 because there was a dead cow in the road.
A woman was driving on 288 and even though she saw the patrol car, was not able to stop in time.
She rear-ended the deputy's car. He was taken to the hospital by helicopter. She was treated at the scene.
She was ticketed for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.
