Houston skies light up during Independence Day party

HOUSTON

Rain wasn't what revelers at Eleanor Tinsley Park near downtown expected to fill the sky but it didn't dampen Ana Rios' spirit.

"No I love it. I think it's great and it cooled everything off," she said.

The event featured live musical performances, including concerts from Martina McBride and Sheryl Crow, plus a spectacular fireworks finale set to music. There will also be a zipline, a family fitness area, hip hop performances and beach volleyball matches.

And this year, security was a top priority.

Security personnel at the fourth annual Freedom Over Texas was strategically positioned not only at gate entrances, but across the entire festival grounds. The Houston Police Department's special operations division is part of the planning team for Houston's biggest July 4th party.

"They work with us on all the new elements that we might add for this show and all the shows that we do," Freedom over Texas producer Susan Christian said.

Aside from their uniformed presence, bomb-sniffing dogs are walking the grounds. They started early Thursday morning, and are the only canines allowed on site.

The event runs started at 4pm and runs to 10pm at Eleanor Tinsley Park. You can also watch the show from the comfort of your couch on ABC13 starting at 7pm.
