Investigators say Nick Gates from Houston, called Cruz's offices in Austin and San Antonio, saying he'd kidnap and kill Cruz and his father if he didn't get the money. Court documents show Gates claimed the sun would blow up and he'd be able to prevent it with the cash.
Federal agents say Gates has previously spent time in a mental health facility.
Gates, 37, is charged with making a terroristic threat.
