Dallas considers banning some plastic bags

DALLAS, TX

Dallas councilman Dwaine Caraway's proposal would ban grocery and drugstore plastic bags, with some exceptions for bags typically used by other businesses. Caraway tells The Dallas Morning News that a ban would help keep the city cleaner.

His proposal is modeled on the one that's now in effect in Austin. The Texas Retailers Association has challenged the ban in court, and the case is before a judge.

Brownsville, Fort Stockton and South Padre Island also have plastic bag bans.

While environmental groups say reducing plastic bag use would cut down on trash and pollution, a spokesman for Kroger supermarkets says customers deserve a choice of bags.
