The Insurance Council of Texas estimates that insured losses from last week's hail storm in Amarillo will total about $400 million.

The total exceeds the record set in 2004 of $175 million.

The Amarillo Globe-News reports that the trade association derived its estimate by taking reports from insurers and applying average costs for roof and auto repair.

Hail the size of baseballs damaged an estimated 35,000 vehicles and thousands of homes. The Amarillo Botanical Gardens suffered complete destruction.

The storm hit after sunset on May 28.
