One killed when car slams into pole in northeast Houston following police chase

HOUSTON

It was a brief chase that ended about four minutes after it started, with a crash at a light pole in the 9600 block of Hirsch. The unidentified driver of what was a stolen car was pulled over just a few miles away on a traffic stop, then he took off on surface streets in northeast Houston, followed by a police car.

The suspect is said to have driven the wrong way on Hirsch, in an apparent effort to avoid traffic. That decision proved fatal.

"As he was going through this intersection, against the red light, he was struck by the driver of a Jeep," said police spokesperson Keese Smith. "That collision then forced his vehicle into a light pole, and he was pronounced dead at the scene."

A third car was also struck during this incident. The people inside the Jeep were a man, woman and a five-month-old baby who was riding in an infant seat. The driver and passenger in the third car were also hurt. They were all transported to area hospitals with minor injuries.

The name of the driver has not been released.
