Deputy and others rescue child from drowning

CRYSTAL BEACH, TX

Sheriff's Captain Pete Sifuentes was patrolling the beach in the area of Gulf Shores Drive in Crystal Beach about 4pm Sunday when he was called to help an unresponsive child in the water nearby. He ran several yards into the water where family members were trying to retrieve a six-year-old boy, who was completely unresponsive.

Sifuentes helped bring the child ashore and started CPR, aided by a passer-by who saw he needed additional help. The child started coughing up water as Peninsula EMS personnel arrived on the scene to render aid. The youth was rushed via ambulance to John Sealy Hospital in Galveston.

The victim's seven-year-old sister noticed the boy was having trouble in water two to three feet deep several yards offshore, alerting family members there to what she saw. An aunt and Sifuentes are both credited with bringing him ashore.

Reports from the hospital indicate the boy is expected to make a full recovery.
