Houston man, 50, drowns in Lake Conroe

CONROE, TX

According to Montgomery County Precinct 1 Constable's Office investigators, it happened around 5:30pm. Deputies said the man had rented a pontoon boat and was boating with family and friends when he decided to take a swim.

The boat floated away from the man, and authorities said no one else on the boat knew how to operate it in order to get back to him.

A nearby resident heard the commotion, grabbed a floatation device and rushed out to help the man. He was able to bring him to the surface but then had trouble returning himself. Another boat saw what was happening and pulled both men aboard, calling 911 as they went to shore.

The 50-year-old man was taken to Conroe Regional Medical Center where he later died. The homeowner who jumped in to rescue him survived.

This case remains under investigation. Authorities say the boat the man was in was carrying too many people and none of them were wearing life vests.
