Tank ruptures, leaks chemical into southeast Houston gully

HOUSTON

Residents on Flagstone Terrace near South Richey called 911 and reported smelling chemicals in a stream.

Investigators tracked the chemical back to a biodiesel company on Albright. One of their tanks had ruptured and was leaking the chemical into the water. The company is bringing in equipment to contain the chemical and to clean it up.

"So far we've located a leaking container. The container could hold up to approximately 20,000 to 30,000 gallons," said Dep. Chief Fernando Herrera with the Houston Fire Department. "We don't know how much product was in the container when it began leaking. They're investigating right now and containing the product in the bayou."

They will also have to pump the tank out. It is not yet clear why the tank ruptured.
