Are retailers rewards cards for frequent customers worth it?

HOUSTON

Charming Charlie just launched their new rewards program, offering their repeat customers rewards for shopping. Other retailers have been at it for a while but what do you really "earn" when you shop?

Being a member has its perks, say some shoppers.

Shopper Pearlie Marshall said, "Actually, I don't buy anything unless I have a coupon or a rewards card."

Target's Red Card is not the typical rewards card because it is in the form of a debit card or credit card, so you must apply for one. You don't have to go through a credit check with the debit card but you will need one for the credit card. Either way the savings are five percent off everything at any Target store or online. With the Target Red Card you are eligible for free shipping at Target.com, and get five percent off on your prescriptions, Starbucks and at Target optical centers.

Over at JC Penney, the company has a JCP rewards program that will get you $10 back on $100 worth of merchandise you buy during the course of a month. You can register for the program at jcprewards.com. But if want to score even more rewards and are a frequent customer, it might worth it for you to apply for a JCP credit card.

"If you spend $1,000 with your JCP card, you can get up to 10, $10 rewards each and every month," company spokesperson Nelson Whittington explained.

At Charming Charlie, the store kicked off their new Charm Club Rewards, but there is no card to register with this program.

"All you have to provide to sign up is your name, your phone number and your email address," said Kim Lewis with Charming Charlie.

With Charm Rewards, if you spend $100, you will get a $5 reward. Plus, there will be opportunities to earn double points and a birthday surprise with this program.

At Gymboree the program is one point for every dollar you spend. You would have to accumulate 250 point to get a $5 reward certificate and it expires 45 days after issue.

At DSW, Designer Shoe Warehouse, you'll get a $10 certificate when you earn 1,500 points.

At Staples rewards, it's 5 percent back on everything. Plus, you'll get free shipping on all orders from Staples.com and $2 back when you recycle ink cartiridges.

In Best Buy's program, you have to spend $250 to earn a $5 reward certificate. You also get coupons for Reward Zone members.

Some of the rewards have a short expiration date of a month to 45 days, so don't wait too long to use those bonuses.
