Condemned death row inmate who once escaped from Harris County Jail loses appeal

HOUSTON

Charles Victor Thompson was convicted and sentenced to die for the 1998 slayings of his former girlfriend and her new boyfriend at her suburban Houston apartment. His sentence was thrown out by the court in 2001. The appeal the court ruled on Wednesday raised legal questions about his second punishment trial where he again received the death penalty.

Thompson was in the Harris County Jail awaiting the new punishment hearing when he used a smuggled handcuff key to free himself and took advantage of lax jail security to walk out. The 42-year-old Thompson was captured three days later near Shreveport, La.
