Ra Rushi hosting competitive eating contest with sushi rolls

HOUSTON

If you think you can throw down, you may be the perfect contestant for Ra Sushi's "Sushi Showdown." The ultimate sushi-face off is organized like NCAA basketball brackets, with first-round competitors racing against the clock and each other. Their task is to take down as much sushi as possible in three minutes.

"They're not gonna be cut for the competition. They're going to be whole rolls that they're going to be eating. Every contestant is allowed one glass of water throughout the heat," Ra Sushi manager Gavin Bouey said.

"I'm actually taking it very seriously. I'm in it to win it," contestant Teddy Guy said.

While it's Guy's first eating contest, he says his palate -- and stomach -- are well trained.

"I mean, I'll probably kill two to three orders of California rolls myself on any given day," Guy said. "I clean out the plates basically. I'll eat a lot."

Not to be outdone by Jordan Fewox.

"I usually eat three to four rolls in a sitting, so I don't think an eating competition would be too hard for me," Fewox said.

She is no meek amateur.

"I'm gonna be the one that they would never suspect," Fewox said.

Fewox isn't intimidated by a finals championship round that includes five minutes of chowing down on Tootsy Maki, a crab, shrimp, cucumber and crunchy tempura roll.

"My mom always tells me I eat fast anyway so I'm sure speed is not an issue for me. I'm pretty handy with chop sticks, so that won't be an issue either," she said.

The contest is 3-6pm Sunday at Ra Sushi in Highland Village. The grand prize winner gets a gift certificate for $600 worth of Ra Sushi.

The contest is full, but supporters are welcome.
