On April 4, 1968, Dr. King was gunned down in Memphis by James Earl Ray. Four years earlier, King was the youngest person to date to win the Nobel peace prize.
His legacy includes a posthumous presidential medal of freedom; a monument in Washington; and a national holiday in his name, observed every January
