It happened just before 5:30pm on Almeda School Road at Danfield Drive in southwest Houston.
According to the Houston Fire Department, strong winds knocked down a tree. The roots of the tree were connected to the building and when it fell, it pulled up a water heater and sparked a gas fire on one end of the building.
While the smoke, flames and water did cause damage, most of the damage to the units was from the tree, which was inside the apartments.
No injuries were reported, but officials said about two-thirds of the building was damaged.
