Car slams into east Houston apartment, injures sleeping man

HOUSTON

It happened just after 2:30pm at an apartment complex in the 12000 block of Fleming Drive as a 56-year-old man was sleeping in a hammock.

The car came to a stop just inches from the bed and crib where a mother and one-year-old baby sleep. Luckily, they were both next door, walking toward their apartment when it happened.

A man who neighbors say lives here in this apartment complex was driving home and accidentally crashed into this apartment.

The crash was so forceful that the victim was pinned underneath the car and neighbors had to come together to save the victim's life.

"Four guys came in and they flipped the car and that's when they pulled out the guy. They brought the guy out from the living room to the ambulance," neighbor Joanna Calacios said. "The fire department came out and once they got here, they covered him up with bandages on his head, a neck brace and it was hurting so bad on his chest so they rushed him to East Regional Hospital on I-10."

Family members have identified the victim as 56-year-old Mario Losano.

"We hope he's going to be better," Losano's cousin, Danny Gomez, said.

Losano is now in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.

Meanwhile, the driver, who police say may have been drinking, was taken to jail.

"He said, 'I know I what I did, I know it was wrong and I don't want to run away because that's going to cause more problems,'" neighbor Ruth Benitez said.

Despite all of the damage the wreck has caused, the family says they feel extremely lucky.
