Mom sentenced to prison for DWI crash that killed baby

HOUSTON

Ashley Heil agreed to a plead deal on Tuesday in order to avoid a possible life sentence, according to the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office. She must serve at least half of her prison sentence before becoming eligible for parole and pay a $5,000 fine.

Prosecutors say Heil is solely responsible for the deadly April 2012 accident in Cut and Shoot. They say she was legally intoxicated, speeding, lost control and crashed her SUV into a tree, instantly killing her 8-month-old daughter, Whilow.

Heil was initially charged with intoxication manslaughter, but evidence collected at the scene allowed prosecutors to elevate the charge to first-degree felony murder.

Heil was on probation for a second-degree drug charge out of Harris County, for which she faces also 20 years in prison.
