Houston Zoo harnesses solar power for its on-ground vehicles in effort to go green

HOUSTON

Volunteers Thursday helped the zoo convert 18 electric carts to use solar power. A team of solar experts from NRG Energy helped zoo staff make the conversions. This completes the transition of the zoo's on-ground vehicles to solar power.

NRG says this helps show off their solar technology to customers.

"So we are trying to make ways that our customers can see it's available, because they may not think it's available and really do something good for the zoo and the greater community," said Misty White, Executive Director of the Reliant Foundation.

Some of the Houston Zoo's solar carts will go on display at City Hall during Mayor Annise Parker's Earth Day breakfast on Wednesday, April 10.
