Suspect armed with machete barricaded in apartment surrenders after SWAT standoff

HOUSTON

The man had been holding his girlfriend hostage at an apartment complex on Deep Forest Drive near Pinemont. Police told us this began as a domestic dispute between a 25-year-old man and his 19-year-old girlfriend.

Houston police say the two had a party at their apartment last night and at one point got into an argument.

The woman, police say, then called a friend to help her move her things out of the apartment. Police say they started to leave early this morning, but the man pulled the woman back into the apartment, and was holding her there against her will.

Police believe the man was armed with a machete.

The woman was finally released by the man shortly after 7am and she appears to be unharmed, police say.

After releasing his girlfriend, the man still wouldn't come out of the apartment. Negotiators encouraged the man to surrender and at around 7:45am, he finally surrendered peacefully.

Police say he is in custody and faces kidnapping charges.
