Suspect fatally shot by Harris County deputy following alleged robbery, chase

HOUSTON

The whole thing started around 9:40pm at a Family Dollar Store on Kuykendahl at around 9:40pm when four suspect allegedly tried to rob the place. Someone called 911 as this was happening.

Deputies got to the scene just as the suspects were leaving and chased them into a neighborhood. The suspects crashed their car near Encreek and Bycreek, and the four men scattered. The Sheriff's Office K9 units were deployed to help assist in searching for the suspects.

Three of them took off in one direction and deputies cornered the fourth man behind a home.

"The suspect was attempting to flee over a fence line. He was armed with a weapon and turned toward the deputy," said Deputy Thomas Gilliland with the Harris County Sheriff's Office. "The deputy, fearing for his life, fired his weapon, striking the suspect several times."

That man was pronounced dead at the scene. The other three suspects were taken into custody and will be facing robbery charges.

The deputy who fired his weapon wasn't hurt. He'll be placed on administrative duty and there will be an investigation into the shooting. The Harris County District Attorney's Office will also conduct an investigation.
