Firefighters battle 2-alarm blaze in west Houston

HOUSTON

The fire began just before 9pm at Westheimer Apartments in the 7900 block of Westheimer near Dunvale, and it quickly intensified. Fire officials say it started in one unit and then spread to two more.

Many residents were forced to evacuate. Hundreds were outside their apartments, watching the activity. Most were able to return home, but not all of them.

"It's good that none of us were inside. All of us were gone," said Adam Turner, whose apartment was on fire. "We can fend for ourselves. It's just the animals. Everything else can be replaced."

At least three units burned. Several more were damaged by smoke or water.

Red Cross will work with the displaced residents to find them temporary shelter.

No injuries were reported. Firefighters are working to determine the cause.
