San Antonio transit system using electric buses

SAN ANTONIO, TX

VIA Metropolitan Transit has begun offering service known as the Arc. The new buses were purchased as part of a $5 million federal grant.

The vehicles are powered by on-board batteries and use the Robert Thompson Transit Station at the Alamodome for recharging. Officials say the energy comes from solar panels and turbines at wind farms in West Texas that are part of VIA's Windtricity agreement with CPS Energy.

VIA CEO Jeffrey Arndt says the Arc service means a completely emissions-free way to provide transit service to San Antonio's central business district.

The new buses began service Tuesday.
