It was this past Friday morning when firefighters discovered the woman's body badly burned in the back of a vacant washateria in the 1900 block of Gano near Hogan. Now homicide detectives are trying to figure out how she got there.
HPD homicide investigators identify the woman as Anjelica Garibay, a 40-year-old Navy veteran who in recent years had been living on the street.
Her family provided us with pictures of Garibay in better days. She was the mother of three kids, but police say she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in the 1990s, and she was in a downward spiral by 2006.
Her body was found behind a vacant building, badly charred under a piece of plywood.
"It's my belief that the fire was intentionally set to destroy any type of evidence on the body," said HPD Sergeant Eli Cisneros.
Police are looking for anyone who saw her or knows who she was with in the hours leading up to her death.
Anyone with information in this case is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
