Officials broke ground on the new 40,000 seat structure Friday morning. The groundbreaking was ceremonial with the presence of the band and cheerleaders, but the construction of the new stadium actually began in early December. The faculty, students, and board members gathered on Friday to take a moment to reflect on what it took to make it to this point.
The stadium will accommodate at least 40,000 seats with a stadium view featuring the downtown Houston skyline, and a band performance center.
University of Houston President Renu Khator talked about reaching this goal.
"I don't know if you remember, there was a plan on paper to build an end zone facility to our stadium. You remember that? It was an end zone facility. Why? Because that's all we could afford, that's all we could do. No, that's all we could do wasn't good enough for us. We needed to do what is best, what is cutting edge, what is deserving of our student athletes, of our program and of our dream," Khator said.
The new stadium is set to be completed in August of 2014.
The university launched a new website, HoustonFootballStadium.com, where fans can look at the renderings of the new stadium and watch videos of the construction process.
