Suspected car thief in hospital after chase, crash in NE Houston

HOUSTON

The driver was behind the wheel of a stolen car and crashed through a fence into the backyard of a home in northeast Houston.

The family inside the home here woke with a jolt. The car didn't hit their house, but the crash sure shook them up.

It all started around 11:30 last night. An officer tried to pull over a silver Honda on Tidwell. Instead, the driver of the car, which police say turned out to be stolen, kept going. He drove into a neighborhood, missed a curve, and crashed through a fence into the backyard of a house.

Norma Johnson says it's the third time someone has crashed into or near her yard.

"I was getting ready for bed, and I had just put the children to bed and I heard this loud noise," said Johnson. "And it scared me. I went to get my children out of bed because I thought somebody had come through their bedroom."

The crash also sheared off a fire hydrant, but the hydrant did not release any water.

The driver was taken into custody at the scene. He was taken to the hospital with non life threatening injuries.

He will be charged with evading arrest and unauthorized use of a vehicle. Both are felony offenses.

This is the second such chase and crash this week..

We'll have a live report coming up on Eyewitness News this morning.
